Blue Lake Boat House

A quiet morning on the water.

The Blue Lake Boat House sits along the shore of Lake LBJ in Horseshoe Bay, nestled within a small cove. Designed to replace a modest 1970s structure that no longer met the owner’s needs, the new boathouse accommodates a contemporary ski boat while creating generous space for gathering at the water’s edge. Though her children are grown, the owner hoped to continue the family’s lake traditions with the next generation and requested a flexible suite for overnight stays when the main house is full.

The architects pushed the structure into the cove as far as zoning allowed, lifting it above the water to secure unobstructed views past neighboring docks and to create an elevated place for gathering after long days on the lake. Architecturally, the project is organized around a large Swim Deck at lake level for swimming, fishing, sunning, dining, and staging boats. A vertical wood-slatted volume along the shoreline conceals storage, mechanical systems, and an outdoor shower while screening views from the house.

Above, a refined metal-clad “shoebox” volume floats as the Lake Suite, containing a living area, bar, full bath, and a murphy bed. Large sliding doors open the northeast corner to a cantilevered Upper Deck, conceived as an outdoor living room with sweeping views across the cove. A wide stair connects the two levels, while an offset gable roof floats above, providing shade and encouraging natural breezes.

Sustainability strategies quietly support the design. The lifted roof, open-air deck, and operable glazing maximize passive ventilation and reduce reliance on mechanical cooling, limiting conditioned space to just 390 square feet. Durable, low-maintenance materials—including unfinished garapa, recycled teak flooring, exposed Douglas fir, and metal panels—were selected for longevity, efficiency, and reduced environmental impact, ensuring the retreat can be enjoyed for generations.
